Egypt enhances election accessibility for disabled voters
Egypt is taking an important step toward inclusion and accessibility in its 2025 Senate elections by making the voting process easier for people with disabilities.
For the first time, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), in collaboration with the National Election Authority, is introducing Braille and sign language guidance materials at polling stations across the country.
These accessible materials will help voters with visual and hearing impairments to navigate the voting process, including simple instructions on expressing their opinions and casting their ballots. Of note, the back of the ballot now features clear sign language explanations indicating the required number of candidates to be selected in each district, making the process even more transparent and accessible for voters with hearing disabilities.
Dr. Iman Karim, General Supervisor of the NCPD, emphasized that these measures are in line with Egypt’s 2014 Constitution, which guarantees equal political rights and representation for people with disabilities.
Dr. Karim stated, “By taking these steps, we are ensuring effective participation and empowerment for people with disabilities, allowing them to fully exercise their political rights and engage positively in the electoral process. Our efforts are also in accordance with Egypt’s Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Law 10/2018).”
Beyond these measures, the NCPD and the National Election Authority have conducted awareness sessions to educate voters with disabilities about their rights and the importance of political participation, further encouraging an inclusive and empowering environment.
Egypt has recently made similar advances; during the 2024 Presidential Elections, polling stations were made more accessible for people with mobility challenges and Braille ballots were introduced for the first time. Trained observers were also present to support voters and promptly address any challenges they encountered.
Egypt continues to set an example in the region for making democratic participation open to all members of society, ensuring that everyone—regardless of ability—has a voice in shaping their country’s future.
