Chinese leader to host 2025 SCO Summit in Tianjin

Beijing - Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend and host the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, taking place in Tianjin, northern China, on August 31 and September 1, Xinhua reported.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that President Xi will preside over the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO as well as the “SCO Plus” meeting, and will deliver two keynote speeches.

In addition to the summit gatherings, President Xi will host a welcoming banquet for attending leaders and hold a series of bilateral meetings. According to Liu Bin, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister, the summit will be one of the most important diplomatic events held in China this year.

During his addresses, President Xi is expected to outline China’s vision and fresh proposals for the future of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, emphasizing the “Shanghai Spirit,” the organization’s role in addressing contemporary challenges, and in meeting the aspirations of people in the region and beyond. He will also announce new Chinese initiatives to support high-quality development within the SCO and propose innovative ways to deepen cooperation.

The summit will see President Xi, together with fellow SCO leaders, issuing a joint statement, adopting the organization’s ten-year development strategy, and releasing declarations to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the founding of the United Nations. A range of documents will also be signed to enhance security, economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties across member states.

The Tianjin summit is seen as a pivotal opportunity for advancing multilateral cooperation, strengthening international governance, and contributing to peace and stability in the post-World War II global order.
