Egypt issues urgent warning over unauthorized excavation risks to national gas infrastructure
Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has issued an urgent warning about the grave dangers associated with undertaking excavation work without prior coordination with relevant authorities. The ministry highlighted that such unplanned digging poses a direct threat to the country’s extensive natural gas network, which serves homes, factories, and hospitals, and is built to the highest international safety standards.
In an official statement, the ministry, through its subsidiary company Town Gas, described natural gas infrastructure as a vital lifeline for development and daily public services across Egypt. Officials warned that any unauthorized excavation, without proper assessment or review, could lead to catastrophic consequences if gas pipelines are damaged or compromised. Such incidents risk dangerous gas leaks, potentially endangering lives and causing severe damage to both public and private property.
To mitigate these risks, the Ministry of Petroleum urged all parties—including government agencies, construction companies, and private individuals planning any type of excavation—to first contact their local administrative authority to obtain the necessary permits. The ministry emphasized the crucial importance of coordinating in advance with the responsible gas company, including precise on-site inspections to map out the locations and pathways of gas pipelines before any work begins.
These safety procedures are designed to safeguard essential infrastructure and ensure the safety of workers, residents, and surrounding facilities. Strict compliance, officials noted, significantly reduces the risk of unfortunate incidents such as gas explosions or fires, which can cause irreparable human and material losses.
The ministry also called for increased public awareness regarding the importance of advance coordination and full adherence to preventive measures, underscoring that the protection of Egypt's national infrastructure is a collective responsibility that requires cooperation from citizens, private companies, and government institutions alike.
Furthermore, the Ministry appealed to the public: anyone witnessing excavation activity being conducted without the proper licenses or without coordination with gas companies is urged to report it immediately to protect lives and property. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to taking all necessary steps to address any violations and safeguard the public good.
