Egypt celebrates the legacy of Umm Kulthum with ‘Voice of Egypt’ art exhibition

In a heartfelt tribute to one of the world’s most legendary voices, Egypt has launched the "Voice of Egypt" exhibition, an inspiring cultural event honoring the timeless legacy of Umm Kulthum, known affectionately across the Arab world as "The Star of the East."

Recently inaugurated at Cairo’s historic Aisha Fahmy Palace in Zamalek, the "Voice of Egypt" exhibition brings together 29 artists from different generations, offering their unique interpretations of Umm Kulthum’s extraordinary life and artistry. Their works span the fields of painting and sculpture, illustrating how the singer’s profound influence continues to inspire visual artists decades after her passing.

The exhibition is beautifully curated to merge contemporary art with history, featuring a rare collection of original documents, newspapers, magazines, and personal items related to Umm Kulthum. Visitors have the rare opportunity to view precious artifacts from her life—many of which are on loan from Umm Kulthum’s own museum on Manial Island—immersing themselves in the cultural, artistic, and human dimensions of this unparalleled icon.

Egypt’s Minister of Culture, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Henno, emphasized that "Voice of Egypt" reflects Umm Kulthum’s exceptional role as a symbol of Egyptian identity and creativity. “Umm Kulthum was truly the voice of a nation—her songs embodied the spirit of Egypt and the Arab world. She lifted art to the level of a universal and patriotic message, and her voice remains woven into the fabric of our collective memory,” he explained.

This year’s celebrations mark "The Year of Umm Kulthum," a national initiative underscoring Egypt’s commitment to honoring its cultural icons and sharing their brilliance with new generations—both locally and internationally. The exhibition represents a rejuvenation of Umm Kulthum's message, beautifully blending Egypt’s enduring heritage with the visions of contemporary artists.

Dr. Walid Qannoush, Head of the Fine Arts Sector, highlighted how the exhibition has become a vibrant reference point for exploring Umm Kulthum’s far-reaching impact. “Fifty years after her passing, Umm Kulthum continues to inspire artists and audiences alike. She was not only a musical genius, but a powerful national figure, whose contributions to art and to Egyptian society remain influential today,” he said.

In addition to visual artwork, the exhibition features a special archival section documenting Umm Kulthum’s remarkable journey as reflected in Egyptian media over the past century—a captivating experience for visitors interested in both art and history.

By blending fine art with archival treasures, and by bringing together artists from across generations, "Voice of Egypt" offers an immersive experience that transcends language and nationality. The exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring power of culture to connect people, preserve heritage, and honor those whose voices have shaped nations.

Wherever you are in the world, Umm Kulthum’s legacy is sure to touch your heart, and Egypt’s celebration extends a warm invitation to all who wish to experience the richness of its artistic and cultural treasures.
