Cairo authorities evacuate residents hours before building collapse

Swift action from local authorities in Cairo saved lives on Friday after a residential building in the Bab El Shaaria district was successfully evacuated just hours before it collapsed.

Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Deputy Governor of Cairo, confirmed that all residents were safely evacuated from the property at 3 Mahmoud Abdullah Street, off Al-Geish Street, before the incident occurred. No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the collapse.

As a precaution, authorities also evacuated two neighboring buildings to ensure residents’ safety. A specially appointed engineering committee will now inspect the collapsed building as well as adjacent properties to assess any potential structural impact caused by the incident.

Dr. Saber praised the rapid response of Cairo’s emergency and executive teams, noting that the decision to evacuate the building just hours before its collapse was crucial in saving the lives of 11 families.

Cleanup efforts will begin after investigators from the public prosecutor’s office and forensic teams complete their examination of the site to determine the cause of the collapse.

Building collapses occur periodically in Egypt, often due to aging infrastructure or unauthorized construction. The quick action in this case prevented what could have been a major tragedy for the community.
