Egypt accelerates ambitious desalination plans, aims for 9 million cubic meters daily

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to water security and industrial development today, announcing that the country is moving forward with ambitious plans to increase its desalinated water capacity to approximately 9 million cubic meters per day.

During a high-level meeting attended by the Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, as well as representatives from ACWA Power, the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, and other key stakeholders, the Prime Minister emphasized the economic and strategic significance of building a robust domestic desalination industry.

He noted that such efforts will not only help meet Egypt’s growing water needs but also have the potential to benefit the wider region.

A central focus of the meeting was the government’s directive to prioritize local manufacturing and technology transfer in all new desalination projects. This approach is designed to reduce Egypt’s reliance on imports, create new job opportunities, and foster long-term expertise within the country.

Officials reviewed progress on current and upcoming projects with ACWA Power and other partners, and discussed strategies to enhance the efficiency of existing desalination plants. The meeting underscored Egypt’s commitment to sustainable solutions for water security amid rising population pressures and development demands.

The government’s push to localize desalination technologies reflects a broader vision for self-sufficiency and economic resilience, positioning Egypt as a regional leader in water management and industrial innovation.
