Egypt and Armenia strengthen economic ties

The 6th session of the Egyptian-Armenian Joint Committee for Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation was held in the New Capital, chaired by Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, and Kevork Papoyan, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia.

The meetings witnessed extensive and active discussions involving representatives from various relevant ministries and agencies from both sides. The talks focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of agriculture and food security, high technology and artificial intelligence, youth and sports, scientific research, and increasing bilateral trade volumes.

In her address during the committee proceedings, Minister Al-Mashat emphasized the importance of the strong bilateral relations based on mutual respect, and the continuous high-level dialogue between the two countries. She highlighted the historic visit of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Yerevan in January 2023 — the first presidential visit from Egypt to Armenia since its independence — as a milestone that opened a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Dr. Al-Mashat reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Armenia across various fields of mutual interest, extending beyond diplomatic relations to include economic development, scientific cooperation, cultural exchange, and strengthening people-to-people ties. She noted that significant untapped potential remains for diversifying trade and increasing investment flows.

The Minister pointed to promising sectors for expanded cooperation including agriculture and food industries, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, textiles, machinery, and light manufacturing industries. At the same time, she highlighted Armenia’s industrial capabilities, skilled workforce, and access to regional markets as attractive opportunities for Egyptian investors and companies.

Tourism, digital transformation, communications and information technology, capacity building, youth training, and digitization of cultural heritage were also identified as key areas for future partnership.

At the conclusion of the session, the two ministers signed the Protocol of the 6th Session of the Joint Committee, which outlines multiple promising areas for expanding relations, with special emphasis on:

  • Increasing bilateral trade and leveraging competitive advantages of both countries
  • Encouraging the private sector to establish new partnerships and alliances
  • Organizing joint exhibitions
  • Promoting investment and exchange of expertise
  • Inviting Armenian companies to explore investment opportunities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (especially in industry and logistics)
  • Cooperation in SMEs, renewable energy, electricity, youth and sports, culture, and higher education

The Egyptian delegation included representatives from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Investment & Foreign Trade, Agriculture, Electricity & Renewable Energy, Culture, Higher Education, Youth & Sports, Health, Communications & Information Technology, as well as the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), MSME Development Agency, and Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority.

The Armenian side was represented by Ambassador Armen Sargsyan and officials from the ministries of Economy, Foreign Affairs, High-Tech Industry, Health, Education, Science, Culture, Youth, and other relevant entities.

The meeting is considered an important institutional platform for translating political will into practical initiatives, sustainable partnerships, and measurable outcomes that serve the interests of both friendly nations.
