Bumper harvest boosts Uganda’s coffee exports
Uganda, East Africa’s top coffee exporter, saw its coffee exports surge by 21.4% in July compared to the same month last year, thanks to a bountiful harvest in most coffee-growing regions.
According to Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, the country shipped 997,105 bags of coffee (each weighing 60 kilograms) in July 2024, up from 821,593 bags in July 2023. The increase was driven by strong production, particularly in central and southwestern regions.
Coffee—mainly the robusta variety—is a crucial source of foreign currency for Uganda. The export value in July reached $250.6 million, marking a 19.1% rise from the previous year.
These gains highlight Uganda’s vital role in Africa’s coffee industry and its growing presence in global markets.
