Egypt delivers gas to Jordan amid Israeli supply disruption
Egypt has begun supplying Jordan with 100 million cubic feet of natural gas daily to support the operation of its power plants, according to officials quoted by Asharq Bloomberg. This development follows a disruption in Israeli gas deliveries after conflict erupted between Israel and Iran.
Jordanian authorities have confirmed that these Egyptian gas shipments will continue until Israeli supplies are restored. So far, no official explanation or specific timeline has been provided for the suspension, which is believed to be linked to the closure of the Leviathan offshore field.
The interruption of Israeli gas has led to energy shortages in both countries, prompting Egypt to redirect natural gas from certain sectors—such as iron production—as an emergency measure.
This recent arrangement builds upon a bilateral agreement reached in Cairo in December 2024. Under this deal, Jordan will utilize Egypt’s floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) through 2026.
The agreement is designed to lower energy costs and improve the efficient use of resources in anticipation of the completion of a new LNG terminal in Aqaba.
According to the terms, Egypt grants Jordan priority access to its LNG regasification infrastructure, offering flexible usage with minimal fixed costs. This move is set to significantly decrease Jordan’s dependence on its existing port facilities.
The deal forms part of wider efforts by both nations to strengthen energy cooperation and address regional supply challenges through shared infrastructure.
These developments are unfolding amid some of the most direct and intense hostilities between Iran and Israel in recent years. The latest escalation began on June 13, when Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear and military sites, resulting in at least 78 deaths, according to Iran’s representative at the United Nations.
In response, Iran launched hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel, prompting further Israeli strikes on Iranian infrastructure and defense installations. This ongoing exchange has heightened regional tensions and sparked international concern over the potential for broader conflict.
Egypt has urged urgent international action to de-escalate the situation and safeguard regional stability.
