Egypt launches sustainable tourism project in Sharm El-Sheikh
Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt — Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Yasmine Fouad, has inaugurated a major sustainable development project in the village of Gharkana, located within Nabq Protected Area near Sharm El-Sheikh.
The initiative is part of the pioneering “Green Sharm” project, which aims to transform Sharm El-Sheikh into a leading green and sustainable tourism destination on both the national and international stage.
The opening ceremony was attended by Alessandro Fracassetti, Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), South Sinai Governor Dr. Khaled Mubarak, local community leaders, tourism sector representatives, and members of civil society.
Dr. Fouad emphasized that the project is a model for integrated, sustainable development—improving the livelihoods of local residents, promoting their participation in eco-tourism activities, and supporting efforts to conserve Nabq’s unique natural resources. She highlighted the use of environmentally friendly construction and respect for the local Bedouin culture, aiming to attract visitors interested in both ecological and cultural tourism.
Governor Mubarak noted that this collaboration with UNDP highlights Egypt’s commitment to balancing natural resource protection with the needs of local communities—demonstrating a broader philosophy of sustainable growth.
The event featured tours of newly developed housing units, the official opening of a local workshop and association, and screenings of a documentary detailing the project’s progress. A panel discussion with government, civil society, and private sector attendees focused on the future of eco-tourism in Egypt.
This initiative underlines Egypt’s dedication to sustainable development, environmental justice, and meaningful community involvement, setting an inspiring example for the region and beyond.
