Egypt rejects Israeli minister’s remarks linking Sinai to Gaza displacement
Egypt firmly rejects any attempt to invoke the Sinai Peninsula in recent remarks by Israel’s finance minister, a well-informed Egyptian source said.
The source described the comments, made over the past two days about Sinai and the displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, as empty escalatory rhetoric intended to serve electoral goals, according to the Middle East News Agency.
The remarks came as Egypt marked the 53rd anniversary of its October 1973 war victory, the source said, adding that Egypt needed no assurances of its ability to defend its territory and independence.
The international community, the source said, recognises that Israel’s occupation is responsible for making living conditions in Gaza “almost impossible” in an attempt to push residents from their land and end the Palestinian cause.
Egypt would neither accept nor take part in such efforts, the source said, adding that Cairo opposed being drawn into political point-scoring and maintained its policy of not interfering in other countries’ internal affairs.
