Japanese Ikebana workshop opens to children and parents in Cairo

In a heartwarming initiative to foster cross-cultural understanding, The Japan Foundation, Cairo, in collaboration with “Ikebana of Egypt,” announced an exciting upcoming Japanese cultural workshop—‘Ikebana for Children/Teens and Parents’.

This special event invites young participants aged 8–15, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to explore the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arrangement.

This workshop, set for Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 12pm to 2pm at The Japan Foundation in Garden City, aims to introduce first-time learners to the art and philosophy of Ikebana, a discipline dating back over 500 years. Distinguished by its profound philosophy and attention to the beauty of all seasons, Ikebana uses not only flowers, but also branches, leaves, and grasses to harmonize nature and human creativity.

The session will begin with a presentation about Japanese nature, culture, and Ikebana, followed by hands-on flower arrangement under the gentle guidance of certified instructors—Ms. Mona El Labban and Ms. Riham Ghorab, both graduates of Cairo University and recognized for their expertise through international certificates obtained in Japan. Both instructors have extensive experience sharing this evocative art form in Egypt and abroad.

Participation is limited to 20 children, each accompanied by an adult, ensuring an intimate and nurturing environment. The event fee is set at 150 EGP, which covers all materials, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis via an online form. The workshop will be conducted in both Arabic and English, opening the doors for a rich, bilingual exchange.

“In a world that increasingly values cultural exchange, our aim is to create a space where Egyptian families can discover the mindful beauty of Japanese Ikebana and build bridges between our cultures,” said Ms. Mona El Labban.

This workshop represents The Japan Foundation’s longstanding commitment to deepening friendships between Japan and Egypt, and to nurturing the next generation’s curiosity about global traditions.
