Egyptian President and Greek PM discuss regional stability amid rising tensions

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a telephone conversation today with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to exchange views on urgent regional developments and boost cooperation between their countries.

According to the Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson, Prime Minister Mitsotakis sought President Sisi’s perspective on the latest tensions in the region, particularly the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. Both leaders agreed on the urgent need to halt the current escalation and stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through political dialogue and negotiations—not military solutions.

Expressing deep concern, President Sisi and Prime Minister Mitsotakis warned that continued military operations could spark a new wave of instability in the Middle East, with negative consequences for all its peoples, and could also threaten regional and international peace.

The two leaders also emphasized that the world must not lose sight of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Both called for an immediate end to the violence there, urging for greater access to humanitarian aid and a solution to the suffering faced by civilians.

The call also covered several other important regional issues such as the delineation of maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean, the challenge of irregular migration, and developments in Libya. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of forming a unified Libyan government to hold prompt parliamentary and presidential elections, while supporting UN efforts for an actionable, widely accepted roadmap.

President Sisi and Prime Minister Mitsotakis reiterated their commitment to deepening the positive momentum in Egyptian-Greek relations, especially in economic cooperation and energy.

President Sisi further reaffirmed Egypt’s pledge to protect all religious sites within its borders. He highlighted the special importance of Saint Catherine’s Monastery, an iconic spiritual site, and referenced a recent court ruling affirming its protection—stressing the need to correct any misinformation that may circulate abroad regarding this matter.

This phone call underscores the continued partnership between Egypt and Greece in working towards peace, security, and prosperity across the region.
