Egypt PM orders swift settlement of state media authority’s debts

Egypt’s prime minister on Monday discussed a plan to overhaul the National Media Authority and settle its longstanding debts, urging ministers to move quickly to close files that have burdened the state broadcaster for decades, according to a government statement.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, chairing the meeting with senior economic officials and National Media Authority chief Ahmed El-Moslemany, said the government was working to restructure key economic bodies, including the state broadcaster known as Maspero, in order to restore its influence as a major force in Egypt’s soft power.

Madbouly said several meetings had already been held to draft a financial and technical reform plan, stressing that while the government is committed to addressing legacy problems, “what matters is ensuring such crises are not repeated and that Maspero regains its former role and impact.”

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hussein Eissa said the authority had begun implementing a development plan aimed at improving governance, reducing spending and increasing revenue. He said the government was also working with ministries and other bodies to resolve debt disputes and finalise settlements.

Planning Minister Ahmed Rostom said meetings had already taken place to untangle financial overlaps between the broadcaster and other state entities. Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk added that the measures under way aimed to close “old, heavy files” and build sustainable funding for the authority.

El-Moslemany described the meeting as “historic”, saying it reflected genuine political will to address problems that had persisted for years. He outlined challenges facing global media institutions and highlighted recent progress, including efforts to attract major advertising agencies and a sharp rise in digital viewership.

At the close of the meeting, Madbouly instructed relevant ministers to finalise debt settlements in line with agreed terms, while the authority implements its development plan and meets its targets.
