Egypt marks World Refugee Day with message of solidarity

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20, Egypt has emphasized the need for a holistic approach to refugee issues—one that combines both humanitarian and development perspectives.

This approach, Egypt believes, strengthens the resilience of host communities and supports ongoing peace efforts to address the root causes of displacement in refugees’ countries of origin.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Egypt reiterated its commitment to working closely with international organizations, especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The country is dedicated to regional and international efforts for conflict resolution, peace building, and sustainable development, with the goal of creating conditions that allow refugees to voluntarily and safely return to their home countries in dignity.

The Ministry also highlighted that Egypt and the rest of the world remember the millions of people forced to flee their homes in search of safety and dignity—a reminder that renews global solidarity with both refugees and the communities that welcome them.

Egypt has a long history of providing a safe haven to those who have been compelled to leave their countries due to difficult circumstances. Currently, Egypt hosts around 10 million refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants from 62 different nationalities. In 2024, Egypt received the second-highest number of asylum applications worldwide.

The Egyptian government upholds a policy of respect for the human dignity of all refugees and asylum seekers. Refugees in Egypt enjoy freedom of movement and access to basic services, including health and education, just like Egyptian citizens.

With this policy, Egypt shows its ongoing commitment to its international responsibilities and to supporting both refugees and the host communities that welcome them.
