Egypt to launch first luxury sleeping train: Guardian of the Nile

Egypt is set to introduce its first-ever luxury hotel train, named “Guardian of the Nile” in a landmark partnership between the Egyptian National Railways and Italy’s Arsenale Group, the company behind the acclaimed La Dolce Vita Orient Express.

Scheduled to begin operations in 2027, the train will offer an exclusive three-day, two-night “slow travel” journey from Cairo to Aswan, stopping at major archaeological sites along the Nile including Luxor. With only 40 elegantly appointed cabins (Deluxe, Suite, and Honor Suite) accommodating a maximum of 80 guests, the train promises five-star hospitality on wheels, blending ancient Egyptian design motifs with contemporary Italian luxury.

The fully refurbished train will consist of 15 carriages featuring fine dining, bar cars, and observation lounges, delivering an immersive cultural experience that combines the romance of Nile cruises with the charm of rail travel.

Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale Group, stated: “We are delighted to partner with Egypt to launch a new model of sustainable cultural tourism that redefines luxury rail travel.”

Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel El-Waziri emphasized that the project is part of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s broader plan to modernize the railway network and reposition Egypt as a premier high-end tourism destination.

The “Guardian of the Nile” joins Arsenale’s growing global portfolio of luxury trains, including La Dolce Vita (Italy, launched 2025), Dream of the Desert (Saudi Arabia), Luxury Railway UAE, and the upcoming Samarkand Express (Uzbekistan, 2026).

Inspired by the golden age of travel immortalized by writers such as Agatha Christie — who penned Death on the Nile in Aswan — the new train aims to revive the magic of slow, sophisticated journeys through one of the world’s richest historical corridors.
