Iranian FM to join OIC talks in Turkey over rising Israel-Iran tensions
ANKARA – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is set to participate in a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul this Saturday, a Turkish foreign ministry official confirmed on Thursday, as hostilities intensify between Israel and Iran, according to Reuters.
According to the source, the special session of the 51st OIC Council of Foreign Ministers will primarily address Israel’s recent attacks on Iran, including Thursday’s strike on the Khondab nuclear facility in Arak.
The Israeli military stated that it struck a partially constructed heavy-water reactor at the site, which, according to experts, has the potential to produce weapons-grade plutonium.
Turkey has strongly condemned Israel’s actions, labeling them illegal, and maintains that Iran was justified in its response.
The summit, which will run for two days, is expected to open with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urging unity among Muslim nations in the face of ongoing "destabilising actions" in the region, the ministry source said. President Tayyip Erdogan is also slated to speak at the conference.
Comprised of 57 member states, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has long stood as a prominent political and diplomatic platform for Muslim countries.
