Egypt’s Ministry of Environment has released an endangered sea turtle back into its natural habitat in the Mediterranean Sea, within the Ashtoum El Gamil Protected Area in Port Said.
According to officials, the turtle was originally found by a woman on one of Egypt’s Mediterranean beaches in poor health, suffering from the effects of plastic pollution. She cared for the turtle until its health improved and then handed it over to the Ministry of Environment, which facilitated its return to the wild.
The successful rescue and release came after a report to the government’s complaints system, and underscore Egypt’s ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity in its coastal regions.
