Egypt steps up nationwide fuel station inspections, uncovers major violations

The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) has announced the results of their latest inspection campaign aimed at ensuring the safe and legal distribution of petroleum products across the country. The campaign, carried out in the third week of July, covered 26 fuel stations across 14 provinces, representing more than half of Egypt’s governorates.

During these inspections, authorities uncovered significant violations. In New Valley Governorate, a fuel station was found stockpiling over 15,700 liters of diesel and gasoline for illegal resale, valued at around 471,000 Egyptian pounds. Police filed charges, and both local officials and law enforcement commended the EGPC for its efforts, especially in border regions.

In Alexandria, the campaign also apprehended a tanker driver illegally selling subsidized diesel, with legal action now underway.

The audit further revealed tampering with nine fuel dispensers across four stations, as well as contamination—water mixed into a diesel storage tank—prompting immediate cleanup measures to protect consumers’ vehicles.

The EGPC’s review wasn’t limited to fuel integrity. Inspectors found safety violations at several stations, such as inadequate fire extinguishers, unsafe fueling practices (like refueling vehicles while engines were running), and smoking on station premises. The corporation has now mandated stricter safety protocols, launched training programs for station staff, and issued directives to marketing companies for urgent corrective action.

The EGPC emphasized its commitment to raising awareness, improving safety standards, and ensuring high-quality service for all motorists—reflecting Egypt’s ongoing efforts to modernize its energy sector and protect citizens.
