Egypt to host historic G20 meeting in 2025
Egypt is preparing to welcome the Group of Twenty (G20) for the first time, as Cairo will host a major G20 meeting from September 1–3, 2025. This gathering is especially significant—it will be the first time the G20 has ever held an official meeting outside its member states since the organization’s founding in 1999.
Ambassador Ragy El-Etreby, Egypt’s personal representative to the G20 and Assistant Foreign Minister, described the event as “a crowning achievement” of Egypt’s distinguished role as a guest country for the third consecutive year—and for the fifth time overall.
According to Ambassador El-Etreby, this exceptional step recognizes Egypt’s regional influence and meaningful contributions to global issues, especially its dedicated efforts to represent the priorities and concerns of developing and African nations on the international stage.
The upcoming meeting, held in cooperation with South Africa’s G20 presidency, will focus on the growing challenge of global food security. The event will bring together many G20 member nations, guest countries, as well as a wide range of international organizations and financing institutions.
Key discussions will include reviewing outcomes from the G20’s food security working group, as well as advancing negotiations on a ministerial declaration about global food security—an important document expected to be formally adopted at the G20 ministerial meeting in South Africa later in September.
Egypt’s hosting of this prestigious event highlights its increasing role in shaping multilateral cooperation and gives a new voice to developing countries at the heart of international decision-making.
