14th Sharm El-Sheikh marathon sets record: Over 70% international runners
The 14th edition of the Sharm El-Sheikh International Marathon concluded successfully on Saturday, marking an unprecedented milestone in Egyptian sporting events with more than 70% of participants coming from outside Egypt – the highest percentage of international runners in the history of marathons held in the country.
Organized under the patronage and supervision of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the South Sinai Governorate, the event was held inside the globally renowned Ras Mohammed National Park.
More than 1,000 runners from 25 nationalities took part in the 5 km, 10 km, and half-marathon (21 km) races, highlighting Egypt’s growing reputation as a premier destination for international sports tourism.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, praised the event as a shining example of inter-ministerial cooperation, stating:
“This year’s overwhelming success confirms Egypt’s advanced position on the global sports tourism map and demonstrates the state’s ability to host world-class, sustainable events to the highest professional standards. The close partnership with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities played a vital role in showcasing Sharm El-Sheikh’s unique natural and tourist attractions to the world.”
Dr. Sobhy added that sports tourism has become a flagship of Egyptian sport and a key driver for attracting tourists and investment, emphasizing that the record foreign participation reflects growing international confidence in Egypt, especially after the marathon received official certification from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).
Participants from around the world widely praised the outstanding organization, logistical support, and medical services provided by the South Sinai Governorate and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, describing the event as “world-class” and “perfectly suited to Egypt’s global stature.
The Sharm El-Sheikh International Marathon continues to solidify the Red Sea resort’s status as a leading global destination for major road races and international sporting events while significantly contributing to the worldwide growth of sports tourism.
