Egypt's Minister of Electricity attends World Atomic Week in Russia

Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, departed for Russia on Wednesday to participate in the events of World Atomic Week. The visit's highlight is the ceremony for the dispatch of the first reactor pressure vessel for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant from its manufacturing facility in St. Petersburg to Egypt.

During his visit, Dr. Esmat will also attend the annual conference of the BRICS Atomic Energy Platform. He is scheduled to meet with Russian nuclear officials and hold discussions with the team responsible for the implementation of Egypt's nuclear power program. These meetings will focus on the progress of the project, including the transition to the reactor pressure vessel phase and the overall timeline for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant.

The minister’s itinerary includes meetings with officials from various equipment manufacturing companies. This is part of Egypt's broader strategy to localize industry and transfer technology, particularly in the clean energy sector.

Dr. Esmat will also attend the official opening of the forum, which is expected to be attended by Russian political leaders, heads of state, prime ministers, and ministers. He will participate in a general session alongside the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and energy ministers from other participating countries. The event will also feature the signing of new participants to the BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform.

This visit underscores the ongoing strategic cooperation and partnership between Egypt and Russia. It is part of Egypt's peaceful nuclear program for electricity generation and includes technical and training programs for Egyptian teams working on the El Dabaa project. The goal is to adhere to the project's timeline for operational start-up and the localization of electrical equipment manufacturing.
