Egypt’s new app weaves urban heritage into everyday life

In Egypt, every city street seems to hum with stories. The blue signs above the avenues, the carved façades of apartment blocks, and the quiet dignity of old neighborhoods all carry reminders of lives that shaped the nation—from legendary singers to groundbreaking writers and architects. Now, a new digital initiative hopes to help every Egyptian, and curious visitor, tune in to these hidden tales.

Launched under the evocative name “Memory of the City” (Zakerat El Madina), the project marks a heartfelt new chapter in Egypt’s approach to safeguarding its urban heritage. At its core is a mobile application—available in both English and Arabic—that transforms Egypt’s cities into living, interactive museums.

“This project is about safeguarding identity and celebrating collective memory,” said Ahmed Fouad Henno, Egypt’s Minister of Culture. His words echo throughout the app, which invites users not just to scroll and swipe, but to wander, observe, and wonder.

Living History, Around Every Corner

With six thoughtfully designed features, “Memory of the City” hinges on a core belief: history is not just something to be studied, but something to be lived and felt.

Perhaps the most touching is “Lived Here.” In neighborhoods across Egypt, you’ll now find small QR codes discreetly placed on historic homes—abodes once graced by icons such as the singer Umm Kulthum or beloved comic actor Ismail Yassin. Scan the code, and a digital biography blossoms on your screen, vividly conjuring the human spirit behind the stone walls.

“Street Stories” brings Cairo’s blue street signs to life, sharing poignant backstories about the people whose names have become part of the city’s geography. Here, urban exploration becomes a treasure hunt for meaning.

The “Heritage Buildings” function serves as your personal architectural guide, pointing out distinguished addresses in Cairo and Port Said, sharing their design secrets and historical significance. Every building becomes a chapter in a much larger story.

Meanwhile, the “Historic Tour” feature transforms your phone into a companion for real-time and virtual journeys. Wander the leafy boulevards of Zamalek or the wide avenues of Heliopolis, led not just by maps but by engaging audiovisual storytelling.

“Signs Near to You” ensures even spontaneous strolls offer a sense of discovery. With just a tap, you can access nearby heritage markers and stories, wherever you are.

For lovers of detail and depth, “Documentary Books” offers free downloads of seminal works on Egypt’s cultural history, making the knowledge both accessible and enduring.

A Gift for Future Generations

The creation of “Memory of the City” was a collaborative effort, led by Mohamed Abu Saada, head of Egypt’s National Organisation for Urban Harmony, and Osama Al-Gohary, Assistant to the Prime Minister and Director of the Information and Decision Support Centre.

Both see the project as more than a showcase; it is a living bridge. “We wish to present the story of our cities with a contemporary vision—one that honours the past and inspires future generations,” Minister Henno shared.

A Global Invitation

With its gentle, user-friendly spirit, “Memory of the City” is an invitation to everyone—residents, expats, tourists—to pause, to listen, and to gather the fragments of urban memory wherever they go.

In a city like Cairo, where past and present overlap at every turn, Egypt’s new app ensures that no story, no legacy, and no corner of memory is left behind.
