Egypt and Saudi Arabia strengthen economic ties amid social media tensions
The enduring relationship between Egypt and Saudi Arabia remains robust despite social media disputes, according to Abdel Hamid Abu Moussa, head of the Egyptian-Saudi Business Council.
In an interview on the “Business World” program on Al-Kahera Wal Nas channel, Abu Moussa emphasized the deep cultural, social, and historical bonds uniting the two nations, asserting that online campaigns cannot undermine these ties.
Highlighting the economic partnership, Abu Moussa noted that Egyptians form the largest group of foreign workers in Saudi Arabia, reflecting the strong people-to-people connection. He also pointed to a bilateral investment protection agreement that safeguards investments between the two countries, with Egypt prioritizing the resolution of any challenges faced by Saudi investors.
“Egypt is uniquely attentive to supporting Saudi investors,” Abu Moussa stated, adding that sectors beyond real estate, such as renewable energy, technology, and tourism, offer higher returns for Saudi capital.
Recent developments underscore the commitment to deepening economic cooperation. In March 2025, the Egyptian parliament approved a bilateral investment protection agreement, following its approval by the Saudi cabinet.
This agreement aims to boost capital inflows, create jobs, and foster a secure environment for investors. Additionally, in September 2024, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) pledged $5 billion for projects in Egypt’s infrastructure, real estate, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors, with the Saudi Egyptian Investment Company (SEIC) leading these efforts.
Both nations are aligning their economic strategies, with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Egypt’s reform programs driving diversification in trade and investment. The Egyptian-Saudi Supreme Coordination Council continues to play a pivotal role in advancing these partnerships, with recent high-level meetings reaffirming the commitment to collaboration.
However, social media tensions have periodically tested the relationship. In June 2025, a coordinated campaign on the X platform, featuring hashtags like #Boycott_Egyptian_Products and #Do_Not_Travel_to_Egypt, sought to stir animosity. Similar online disputes, including a notable exchange in 2023 between commentators in Cairo and Riyadh, have prompted swift official responses to prevent escalation. Despite these challenges, both governments remain focused on countering divisive narratives and reinforcing their strategic partnership.
As Egypt and Saudi Arabia continue to prioritize economic integration and mutual investment, their leaders are determined to ensure that social media disputes do not overshadow their shared goals. With ongoing efforts to streamline regulations and foster a favorable business environment, the two nations are poised to further strengthen their historic ties.
