Sacred cats: Mummies go on display at Egypt’s Imhotep Museum

In thrilling news for history lovers and curious travelers worldwide, Egypt’s Imhotep Museum has unveiled a captivating new exhibition: “Bastet—Guardian of Saqqara.”

The show highlights the enduring bond between ancient Egyptians and their feline companions.

Now open to visitors, the exhibit features 15 beautifully mummified cats and three striking carnelian amulets, all recently discovered at the legendary Bubasteion archaeological site, according to the museum’s director, Dr. Mamdouh Farouk.

Many of the artifacts are wooden cat coffins, each containing a priceless, perfectly preserved mummified cat—profound evidence of the veneration of cats in ancient Egyptian society.

Enthusiasts have plenty of time to visit, as the exhibition will run through October 31, 2025.

Museum officials warmly welcome guests from around the globe—as well as Egypt’s tour guides and their groups—to experience this extraordinary glimpse into a civilization where cats were revered as protectors and symbols of grace.
