Egypt seeks long-term Russian wheat supply deals

Egypt’s Supply and Internal Trade Minister Sherif Farouk met Russia’s United Grain Company (OZK) and the head of the Russian Union of Grain Exporters and Producers on the sidelines of the fifth Russian Grain Forum in Sochi, the ministry said.

Farouk, attending the May 20-23 forum as guest of honour, held talks with OZK chief executive Dmitry Sergeyev on ways to deepen strategic cooperation in grain trade and food security, according to the statement.

The meeting examined mechanisms for long-term contracts to supply Russian wheat to Egypt, aiming to stabilise supply chains and strengthen Cairo’s strategic reserves of key commodities amid global uncertainty, it said.

Russia is among Egypt’s most important wheat suppliers, Farouk was quoted as saying, adding that the talks follow guidance from the political leadership in both countries to expand economic cooperation, diversify sources of supply and develop storage and transport infrastructure.

The sides also discussed prospects for establishing a regional logistics hub for trading and storing grains at Egyptian ports, as well as joint investments in silos and collection and strategic storage centres in Egypt, the statement said.

Sergeyev said OZK and the Russian exporters’ union were looking to expand cooperation with Egypt, describing the Egyptian market as a central destination for Russian grain exports, the statement added.

The talks also covered cooperation in exchanging information and technical and technological expertise related to grain cultivation, storage and handling, and drawing on Russia’s experience in digitising the grain sector and managing logistics, it said.

Egypt’s ambassador to Russia, Hamdy Shaaban, and Ahmed Shawky, head of Egypt’s economic and commercial office in Russia, attended the meeting, according to the statement.
