Egypt stages first live interactive mummification ritual
For the first time, audiences in Egypt experienced a live, interactive theatrical recreation of ancient Egyptian mummification rituals. Held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Geib Theater in Zamalek, “Journey of Immortality: The Mummification Rite in Ancient Egypt” brought to life one of the most sacred traditions of Egypt’s ancient civilization.
Unlike traditional theater, this unique event offered an immersive experience. Drawing on the latest archaeological research, the performance faithfully re-enacted the mummification ceremony as practiced by ancient priests. Audience members were invited to participate, making the event both educational and deeply engaging.
The production was led by Dr. Omar Al-Moataz Bellah, a prominent scholar of ancient Egyptian art and performance, renowned for his efforts to make Egypt’s heritage accessible to the public. Media figure and Egyptologist Hoda Abdelaziz co-hosted and coordinated the event, ensuring an unparalleled audience experience.
Attendees praised the fusion of scholarly insight with a live, hands-on approach, noting a newfound appreciation for the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of Egyptian civilization. Organizers hope this pioneering initiative will inspire similar events across Egypt, blending scientific research with sensory experience to revive national heritage for modern audiences.
