Social initiatives bring Ramadan comfort to families in Egypt

With Ramadan drawing near, families are coming together in anticipation of joyful traditions. This year, a comforting sense of ease and reassurance fills the air, thanks to a series of new government initiatives that are bringing hope and support to millions of families.

The government on Sunday rolled out a social protection package valued at LE40.3 billion, aimed at easing economic pressures on low-income and vulnerable families in the lead-up to both Ramadan and Eid el-Fitr (Lesser Bairam).

Launched under the direction of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, this initiative reflects a renewed commitment to strengthening social safety nets and ensuring direct relief reaches those who need it most.

The new measures include a LE400 cash payment to 10 million ration card households and 5.2 million Takaful and Karama welfare families.

Extra support will go to child pensioners and rural women leaders. During Ramadan, LE9.3 billion is allocated for urgent medical care, expanding healthcare access and speeding up Universal Health Insurance, especially in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Minya.

About LE15 billion will fund rural development projects under the Decent Life initiative, improving infrastructure and services. In addition, LE4 billion will raise wheat purchase prices to support farmers and food security.

Political analyst Rashad Abdel Ghani said that these measures highlight the leadership’s firm commitment to supporting low- and middle-income citizens and ensuring that relief reaches those who need it most, with both efficiency and fairness.

He added in a statement that these efforts would enhance community stability and help balance economic reform with the provision of social protection.

Economist  Walid Gaballah, speaking over the phone to a TV show, highlights a two-pronged approach to empowering families. He also points to anticipated medium-term wage increases in the upcoming national budget, set to be presented to parliament in March.

“Initiatives like Hayah Karima have transformed what it means to deliver social justice,” Gaballah said. “We have moved from simply handing out subsidies to investing in job opportunities and supporting economic activity in rural Egypt.”

The president of the Cairo Centre for Economic and Strategic Studies, Abdel Monem el-Sayed, said that household expenses typically spike by 25-40 per cent during the holy fasting month.

He believes the government’s package will strengthen the temporary purchasing power of those most in need, and expects more details on wage increases and expanded food subsidies to be announced in the days ahead.

Beyond direct financial aid, he said, the government continues to broaden its social initiatives with tax and customs reforms that encourage investment and support local industries.

“These steps aim to create sustainable jobs and improve living standards in the long term,” el-Sayed added.
