Apple considers potential acquisition of AI startup Perplexity amid industry race
Apple executives have reportedly discussed the possibility of acquiring Perplexity, an artificial intelligence startup, according to Bloomberg News, which cited sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported.
These preliminary conversations remain in the early stages and may not result in a formal bid, the report noted. So far, Apple’s leadership has not initiated acquisition talks directly with Perplexity’s management.
Both Apple and Perplexity declined to comment when approached by Reuters.
The move comes as major technology firms ramp up investments in artificial intelligence to strengthen their offerings and keep pace in a fast-changing, highly competitive market.
Apple’s head of mergers and acquisitions, Adrian Perica, has reportedly considered the idea alongside services chief Eddy Cue and other senior AI leaders.
Bloomberg News also revealed earlier on Friday that Meta Platforms made its own attempt to purchase Perplexity earlier this year. Last week, Meta committed $14.8 billion to Scale AI and appointed its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to oversee the development of its new superintelligence division.
