Egypt showcases tourism opportunities to Indian Ocean nations

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, has held a virtual workshop introducing the diverse tourism assets of Egypt to representatives of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

The event, themed “Enhancing Cultural Tourism and Diving: Opportunities for Regional Cooperation, Investment in Hospitality, and an Introduction to the Grand Egyptian Museum,” brought together 55 participants from IORA member states.

This initiative aims to boost international relations, foster regional cultural exchange, and promote Egypt as a prime travel destination. With Egypt serving as a “Dialogue Partner” within the IORA organization, the workshop highlighted the country’s commitment to strengthening ties with its Indian Ocean neighbors.

Dr. Soha Bahgat, Advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Training Affairs, noted the enthusiastic participation, which included representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Madagascar, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, the Maldives, Oman, and Mauritius. Sixty percent of attendees were women, reflecting the growing emphasis on women’s empowerment within the tourism sector across the region.

Iman Mahmoud, Director General of International Relations and Agreements at the Ministry, underscored the importance of the close coordination between Egypt’s ministries in delivering a workshop that enhances Egypt’s regional role and strengthens international partnerships.

During the sessions, speakers showcased Egypt’s unique blend of cultural and recreational tourism, spotlighting the country’s efforts to restore historic sites and museums, improve the visitor experience, and promote leisure and diving tourism. Participants learned about the development of Egypt’s stunning Mediterranean and Red Sea destinations, the challenges faced, and Egypt’s future vision for sustainable tourism.

Discussions also explored opportunities for cooperation with IORA states, emphasizing shared tourism interests and models for regional collaboration. A special session introduced the Grand Egyptian Museum, detailing its ambitious history and design, and reaffirming its status as a landmark cultural project with global significance.

The workshop concluded with a focus on tourism investment, particularly in the hospitality sector. Experts highlighted the importance of public and private sector collaboration, innovative hotel concepts, and the ongoing efforts to modernize Egypt’s tourism infrastructure.

This interactive event illustrated Egypt’s continued openness to collaboration and its inspiring vision to welcome travelers from across the world.
