Egyptian medical team restores sight to Palestinian patient in groundbreaking surgery
In an inspiring display of medical innovation and humanitarian support, a team of Egyptian doctors at the Memorial Research Institute of Ophthalmology in Cairo has successfully restored the vision of a Palestinian patient following a highly complex surgery. This remarkable procedure highlights Egypt’s growing role as a regional leader in specialized healthcare and advanced medical research.
According to Dr. Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Ghaffar, President of the General Authority of Teaching Hospitals and Institutes, the Palestinian patient was suffering from irreversible vision loss due to retinal detachment, fibrosis, bleeding, and severe corneal opacity, preventing any previous attempts at retinal repair. The complexity of the case required a multidisciplinary team of expert surgeons, anesthesiologists, and medical staff.
“The General Authority mobilized a special team to handle this intricate challenge, reflecting both advanced medical capability and our commitment to supporting our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” said Dr. Abdel Ghaffar.
Led by retinal specialist Dr. Hazem Al-Nashar and corneal specialist Dr. Safaa Abdel Aziz, the medical team developed a step-by-step treatment plan after thorough examinations. The four-hour operation began with the removal of the opaque cornea, followed by the installation of an artificial cornea to enable retinal repair and silicone oil injection to stabilize the graft. Finally, a human donor cornea was transplanted, restoring significant vision to the patient.
Dr. Hanan Mohie El-Din El-Ghoneimy, Dean of the Institute, celebrated the institute’s capacity for precision diagnosis and advanced surgical intervention, while commending the collaborative efforts of anesthesiology and nursing staff for ensuring patient safety.
“The early results are very promising; the cornea is healthy, and scans show the retina is securely in place,” Dr. El-Ghoneimy said, noting that the patient is currently under observation and recovering well.
This medical achievement was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, who recently affirmed the country’s dedication to offering all possible medical services to those affected by current events in Palestine.
Egypt’s continued investment in healthcare excellence, innovation, and solidarity with regional neighbors is further positioning the nation as a center of medical distinction and compassion.
