Arab science network warns of risks from ‘forever chemicals’ in new report

Sharjah - The Arab Network for Tackling Emerging Environmental Contaminants (EPN), part of the Arab Science and Technology Foundation, has published its first technical report on environmental pollution by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the Arab region.

The report shines a spotlight on the environmental and health challenges posed by these so-called “forever chemicals” and highlights a need for greater regional research and capabilities to address the threat.

PFAS are globally recognized as persistent chemicals that do not easily break down in the environment or the body, sometimes accumulating over time. While these substances have been the focus of hundreds of studies in the United States and Europe, Dr. Adel Al Ghaithi, Chairman of the Network and lead author of the report, notes that only 13 scientific studies have emerged from the Arab world. “This figure is alarmingly low, especially when compared to international efforts,” Al Ghaithi said.

The report also reveals that the majority of environmental and biological samples collected in the region are sent abroad—to countries like Germany, Sweden, and the United States—for analysis, indicating an urgent need for advanced local laboratory capacities using the latest chemical analysis technologies, such as LC-MS/MS and untargeted screening.

Commenting on the report, Dr. Abdullah Al Najjar, Chairman of the Arab Science and Technology Foundation, emphasized the dual nature of the findings: “The EPN’s report highlights the risks our region faces, but it also points to promising opportunities for growth. We have the human talents and resources, and by fostering joint efforts—particularly in research, funding, and international collaboration—we can make significant progress.”

Established in Sharjah under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi in 2000, the Arab Science and Technology Foundation is the largest Arab scientific community, with over 50,000 scientists and innovators in science and technology fields from across the region and beyond. The foundation aims to transform regional potential into significant scientific achievements, broadening opportunities for cooperation, creativity, and a brighter future for coming generations.

The Arab Network for Tackling Emerging Environmental Contaminants (EPN) was launched in April 2025, under the auspices of the Foundation, with the goal of empowering those dedicated to environmental sustainability. In addition to PFAS, EPN’s work also addresses other emerging pollutants in the region, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and microplastics (MPs).

To mark the release of its technical report, EPN will hold a virtual seminar on Saturday, 11 October 2025, at 4:00 pm Mecca time.
