Egypt studies new investment vehicle to boost presence in Africa
Egypt’s investment and agriculture ministers held a high‑level meeting to discuss creating a new investment vehicle aimed at supporting Egyptian companies operating in Africa, the government said on Monday.
Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid and Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk met with senior officials from sovereign, economic and diplomatic bodies to review ways to expand Egypt’s commercial and investment footprint on the continent. The discussions are part of a broader state strategy to strengthen Egypt’s economic presence in African markets and align it with national development priorities.
Farid said Egypt saw significant opportunities in sectors tied to food security and agricultural development, adding that such areas could open the door to broader partnerships with African economies. He said the government was assessing the feasibility of establishing a dedicated African investment entity that would provide technical, financial and procedural support to Egyptian investors seeking to operate in priority sectors.
Farid added that any new structure would work closely with the private sector, which he said had a strong understanding of African business environments. He said government support would focus on streamlining procedures and coordinating efforts across agencies to help Egyptian companies gain a sustainable foothold in African markets.
Farouk said directing Egyptian investment toward Africa could strengthen sustainable supply chains for key crops and essential commodities, helping reduce import costs and improving resilience to global shocks. He said Egypt’s accumulated expertise in managing large‑scale agricultural projects positioned it to play a leading role in regional development initiatives.
He added that cooperation between government bodies, investment funds and financial institutions could help launch major regional agricultural projects and accelerate development across the continent.
Officials attending the meeting included senior representatives from the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the Foreign Ministry and the House of Representatives’ African Affairs Committee.
