“Canek” debuts in Arabic at Cairo International Book Fair
In a celebration of cross-cultural exchange, the Cairo International Book Fair today hosted the launch of the Arabic translation of “Canek,” a seminal work in Mexican literature, further strengthening cultural ties between Mexico and Egypt.
The event was attended by Dr. Rasha Saleh, Director of Egypt’s National Center for Translation, alongside a gathering of academics, translators, and literature enthusiasts. Representing Mexico was Mr. Héctor Ortega, Minister-Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Mexican Embassy in Cairo. Mr. Ortega emphasized the vital role of literary translation in fostering greater understanding between cultures, noting that bringing “Canek” to Arabic readers opens the doors for Egyptian and Arab audiences to explore the richness of Mexican literature.
Highlighting the novel’s universal themes of identity, memory, and dignity, Mr. Ortega explained that “Canek” was chosen for its deep resonance with readers everywhere. He warmly praised the efforts of the National Center for Translation, translator Mohamed Gomaa Tawfiq, and the distinguished jury of the Third Mexican Literature Translation Competition—Prof. Dr. Khaled Abbas and Prof. Dr. Khaled Salem. The ceremony was gracefully moderated by Ali Abdel Latif.
During the event, organizers announced preparations for the fourth edition of the Mexican Literature Translation Competition. The next project will be the Arabic translation of “A Drop of Water” by Mexican author Vince Linero, continuing the mission to strengthen cultural bridges.
This latest initiative beautifully underscores the deepening cultural partnership between Mexico and Egypt, and affirms the vital role of the arts in bringing people together, fostering dialogue, and celebrating the shared humanity that unites us all.
