Egyptian air traffic controllers shine amid regional airspace challenges

In a powerful display of professionalism and resilience, Egyptian air traffic controllers have been commended for their exceptional management and coordination during a period of unprecedented operational challenges in the Middle East.

This recognition came during today’s official visit to the Cairo Air Navigation Center, led by Dr. Sameh El-Hefny, Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation, together with Mr. Mohamed Abu Bakr Farea, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Regional Director for the Middle East. They were joined by key members of the national navigation services sector, as Egypt welcomed an increased number of diverted flights following the closure of several neighboring airspaces.

With traffic surging to over 1,500 aircraft per day, Egyptian air traffic controllers rose to the occasion, expertly managing the surge and ensuring the safety and security of Egypt’s skies.

Dr. El-Hefny praised the team, stating, “Egypt’s air traffic controllers have demonstrated outstanding professionalism and dedication. Their unwavering commitment is a cornerstone of air safety in our country, and we are deeply proud of their exemplary performance.”

He also emphasized that this exceptional response was made possible by the close cooperation and sense of responsibility among all members of the air navigation system, including air traffic and communication officers, aviation information teams, systems engineers, and maintenance crews. “The trust placed in these professionals to manage our nation’s skies is immense, and they continue to deliver safety and stability from behind the radar screens,” Dr. El-Hefny added.

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Abu Bakr Farea of ICAO highlighted the vital role played by Egyptian air traffic controllers not just nationally, but across the region and globally. He praised their high level of technical skill, their swift crisis response, and their ability to maintain seamless operations even under unprecedented pressure: “What we have seen at Cairo Air Navigation Center is a remarkable evolution in infrastructure and the adoption of advanced technologies. Egypt’s professionals have truly set an international example in operational planning and crisis management.”

Mr. Farea also underlined that Egypt’s ability to absorb a higher traffic load while maintaining international safety standards reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to aviation excellence and collaboration at a global level.

A model for international aviation safety

The past days’ events, which saw Egypt’s airspace turn into a vital corridor for hundreds of flights each day, have reaffirmed the country’s role as a regional aviation hub. The smooth coordination and effective teamwork on display in Cairo stand as a testament to the dedication of Egypt’s air navigation personnel, and to the robust infrastructure supporting the skies above one of the world’s busiest regions.
