Egypt and Visa discuss expanding digital payment and fintech cooperation

Washington, D.C. – Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Eng. Hassan El Khatib, met with top executives from global payments giant Visa in Washington on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings, to discuss advancing Egypt’s digital transformation and expanding its electronic payments ecosystem.

Minister El Khatib highlighted Egypt’s commitment to building a transparent, competitive economy by embracing comprehensive digital reforms and strengthening financial and trade integration.

He emphasized ongoing efforts to simplify customs procedures, enhance governmental service efficiency, and expand electronic payments, noting that 70% of Egyptians are under 30—a key driver of digital adoption.

Visa executives commended Egypt’s economic and structural reforms, identifying the country as a strategic growth market alongside Japan, Germany, and Brazil. The company has quadrupled its Cairo office workforce and announced the relocation of its regional digital sales hub from Dubai to Cairo, citing Egypt’s strong talent and technological infrastructure.

Visa further expressed plans to deepen its investments by developing new digital solutions for government payments and e-commerce, reaffirming confidence in Egypt’s potential as a regional fintech leader.

Minister El Khatib described partnerships with leading global firms like Visa as vital pillars in building a fully digital economy and positioning Egypt as a hub for financial technology in the region.
