EU official visits Historic Cairo’s City of the Dead to witness restoration efforts
Director for North Africa at the Directorate-General for MENA, Francisco Gaztelu Mezquiriz, immersed himself in this legacy with a visit to the legendary City of the Dead in Historic Cairo.
The visit highlighted the dedicated efforts of the EU-Egypt partnership, which is playing a vital role in restoring iconic monuments and supporting local communities in preserving Egypt’s rich history, according to a statement from the European Union in Egypt.
The European Union sees cultural exchange as a cornerstone of its collaboration with Egypt and the wider Mediterranean region.
Through the new Pact for the Mediterranean initiative, the EU aims to further strengthen connections between people, foster economic growth, and bolster regional security—making a shared heritage an even more vibrant bridge between cultures.
For travelers and heritage enthusiasts alike, the ongoing restoration work is a shining example of how international partnerships can help safeguard the stories and treasures of the past for generations to come.
