Egypt calls for revitalized African efforts to prevent, resolve conflicts
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Badr Abdel-Aty, participated today in a session of the African Union's Peace and Security Council.
The session, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings, focused on revitalizing efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts in Africa.
In his speech, Abdel-Aty praised the African Union's role in promoting stability and resolving disputes. He noted that the increasing challenges facing the continent, including armed conflicts, unconstitutional changes of government, terrorism, and foreign interference, require a comprehensive approach to strengthen the peace and security architecture.
He emphasized that achieving sustainable peace and development requires political will while preserving the unity and institutions of states. He also stressed the importance of providing sustainable funding for peace support operations to ensure their effectiveness, highlighting the need to activate the AU Peace Fund and continue to mobilize support for these missions through UN-assessed contributions, in line with Security Council Resolution 2719.
Abdel-Aty also highlighted the strong link between security and development, showcasing Egypt's role in post-conflict reconstruction. He expressed Egypt's readiness to use its expertise in capacity building and reconstruction to assist countries emerging from conflicts, in line with the work programs of the African Union's Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Center, which Egypt hosts.
Addressing the situation in Egypt's direct neighborhood, Abdel-Aty affirmed the importance of continuing to support Sudan to preserve its unity, territorial integrity, and institutions.
He also mentioned the ongoing arrangements for deploying police and military elements in the African Union Support and Stability Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), while continuing to mobilize support for its sustainable funding. The minister also welcomed the efforts to end the division in Libya, particularly the UN roadmap, emphasizing that the solution must be purely Libyan, based on the Skhirat Agreement.
In another context, Abdel-Aty warned of the humanitarian catastrophe resulting from the ongoing war in Gaza and the risks it poses to international peace and security. He affirmed Egypt's pivotal role in mediation and facilitating humanitarian aid access. He called on African nations to continue rejecting any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land, viewing it as ethnic cleansing in the context of genocide.
The minister concluded by reaffirming Egypt's unwavering commitment to the continent's unity, sovereignty, and prosperity, and its dedication to working with all sisterly African countries to achieve peace and sustainable development.
