Egyptian and Spanish foreign ministers hold talks amid royal visit to Cairo

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptians Abroad, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met with his Spanish counterpart, Mr. José Manuel Albares, on Wednesday, as part of the official visit to Egypt by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain.

In the meeting, Minister Abdelatty praised the growing ties between Egypt and Spain, highlighting the recent upgrade to a strategic partnership between the two countries. He warmly welcomed the historic visit of the Spanish monarchs, describing it as a reflection of the deep and friendly relations shared by Egypt and Spain.

Minister Abdelatty also expressed appreciation for Spain’s continued support for Egypt within the European Union, emphasizing the mutual alignment of both countries in efforts to resolve regional conflicts and strengthen regional security and stability. He voiced hope for ongoing Spanish backing in various European institutions, particularly in initiatives aimed at peace and security.

The discussion also focused on bilateral cooperation in key sectors, with Minister Abdelatty welcoming Spanish corporate participation in Egypt’s energy projects, especially in green hydrogen production. He underscored the importance of enhancing collaboration in areas such as investment, tourism, education, migration, and counter-terrorism.

Turning to regional developments, Dr. Abdelatty briefed Minister Albares on the outcomes of the recent Arab-Islamic Emergency Summit held in Doha, reiterating Egypt’s firm rejection of Israeli violations of the sovereignty of neighboring Arab states. He expressed Egypt’s condemnation of ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza, including the recent ground incursion, warning of the risks these pose to regional security.

The Egyptian Minister stressed the urgent need for the international community to oppose policies of blockade, starvation, settlement expansion, and attempts at forced displacement. Dr. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s call for a comprehensive and just resolution to the Palestinian issue, based on the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Minister Abdelatty also commended Spain’s principled stance in supporting the Palestinian cause and its recent decisions in response to Israeli military actions in Gaza, welcoming Spain’s solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of Egypt and Spain to deepening their partnership and working together toward regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
