Egypt and Somalia leaders pledge expanded cooperation for stability in the Horn of Africa
Alamein, Egypt — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the city of Alamein today, hosting a series of high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and promoting stability in the Horn of Africa.
In a statement following private and expanded discussions between their delegations, both leaders expressed their commitment to advancing the partnership between Egypt and Somalia—including cooperation in political, economic, security, and military fields. They also addressed pressing regional and continental issues, among them the security and political situation in the Horn of Africa and the safety of the Red Sea.
President El-Sisi emphasized the deep-rooted ties linking Egypt and Somalia—united by history, culture, and shared aspirations for peace and prosperity.
“This visit underlines our mutual commitment to elevating our strategic partnership to serve the interests of our peoples and to support efforts towards development and stability across Somalia and the region,” he noted.
A key focus of the talks was implementing the political agreement signed between the two countries earlier this year, aiming to boost cooperation on all levels. President El-Sisi and President Mohamud pledged to “build on current momentum” with concrete steps to deepen joint projects and collaboration, particularly regarding security and counterterrorism.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of the military cooperation protocol signed in August 2024, designed to enhance the skills of Somali personnel and strengthen national institutions in securing peace and combating extremist groups. President El-Sisi highlighted Egypt’s ongoing support for Somalia’s sovereignty and stability.
The two leaders also discussed Egypt’s military and police contributions to the new African Union mission supporting peace in Somalia. They stressed the need for sustained international cooperation and predictable funding to ensure the mission’s effectiveness.
President El-Sisi took the opportunity to praise President Mohamud’s efforts to promote national unity in Somalia and tackle urgent challenges, especially the fight against terrorism and institution-building. He reiterated Egypt’s full backing for Somalia’s political stability and sustainable development.
“We have made significant progress in consolidating our ties and deepening coordination,” President El-Sisi said. “Today, we agree to continue this path and to further broaden our cooperation for the benefit of both our nations and the wider region.”
The meeting concluded with both presidents expressing hope for close ongoing coordination and joint efforts to foster security and prosperity in Somalia, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region.
