Dr. Khaled Hassan named deputy CEO for archaeology at GEM

The Egyptian government has appointed Dr. Khaled Hassan, a leading Egyptologist and professor at Misr University for Science and Technology, as the new Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Archaeological Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).


The decision, issued by Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, underscores Egypt’s ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation in the management of one of its most significant cultural institutions. Mr. Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities and Chairman of GEM’s Board of Directors, highlighted that Dr. Hassan’s nomination reflects a strategy of leveraging outstanding scientific expertise to further enhance institutional performance and deliver the highest standards in museum and archaeological practices.


Dr. Khaled Hassan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Egyptology from Cairo University’s Faculty of Archaeology and earned his Ph.D. in Egyptian Archaeology in 2014 with top honors. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Ancient Egyptian Language in 2020 and attained full professorship in 2025.


Widely recognized as one of Egypt's foremost experts on the Hieratic script, Dr. Hassan has made significant scholarly contributions to the study of ancient Egyptian language. He has published nearly 30 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious international journals and authored several academic books in English. His international collaborative work includes partnerships with distinguished institutions such as Sorbonne University (France), Leiden University (Netherlands), Oxford University (UK), and the University of Liège (Belgium).


Dr. Hassan also serves as a peer reviewer for leading academic journals and universities specializing in Egyptian archaeology, and he has actively participated in major international conferences both in Egypt and abroad. He is also noted for his dedication to mentoring and training young researchers in international academic publishing.


His accolades include several international research grants, including a fellowship at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany. He has joined numerous archaeological missions and scientific projects and previously served on the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities committee for international museum exhibitions. Dr. Hassan is also a board member of the International Association of Egyptologists.


Beyond his academic achievements, Dr. Hassan has significant experience in the fields of education quality and global ranking methodologies, and has held research posts at the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology and the American Research Center in Egypt.


This new appointment is expected to further strengthen the Grand Egyptian Museum’s international stature and support Egypt’s ongoing efforts to advance archaeological research, museum management, and the preservation of its unique heritage for the world to appreciate.
