Egypt clarifies nature of recent Gas deal with Israel
The Egyptian government has clarified details regarding the recently publicized natural gas deal with Israel, emphasizing that the agreement is a purely commercial undertaking without any political implications.
Diaa Rashwan, Chairman of Egypt’s State Information Service, addressed reports circulating in both the media and on social platforms about the Egypt-Israel gas deal. He underlined that this agreement is a straightforward business arrangement, concluded on the basis of economic and investment considerations alone, with no political dimensions or understandings involved.
Rashwan stressed that the parties to the deal are well-established international energy companies, including the American firm Chevron, in addition to specialized Egyptian companies responsible for the receipt, transport, and handling of natural gas. The Egyptian government has not been directly involved in signing these contracts.
He further explained that the agreement is in line with Egypt’s strategic interest in reinforcing its position as the East Mediterranean’s sole regional gas hub. With a highly developed network of liquefaction plants, transportation systems, and storage facilities, Egypt is uniquely placed to accept gas from various sources and partners, with flexibility and resilience. This advanced infrastructure enables the country to make independent economic decisions based solely on its national interests.
Rashwan also warned against misinformation or politically motivated campaigns seeking to portray the deal as having political significance. He reiterated that negotiations were completed some time ago and were based on standard commercial market practices.
Finally, Rashwan affirmed Egypt’s unwavering stance on the Palestinian issue. He emphasized Egypt’s continued support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, its categorical rejection of forced displacement, and its commitment to a two-state solution. He highlighted Egypt’s active diplomatic role in thwarting displacement plans and promoting the reconstruction of Gaza, as reaffirmed at the recent Sharm El-Sheikh summit, underscoring the country’s consistent political and ethical commitments in the region.
