Egypt condemns attack on UNIFIL position in south Lebanon
Egypt on Friday strongly condemned an attack targeting a position of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, which killed a Serbian soldier and wounded two others from Spain and El Salvador.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed its “absolute rejection of any targeting of United Nations peacekeeping forces” and stressed the need to ensure the safety and security of their personnel.
It underlined the importance of enabling UNIFIL members to carry out their duties in accordance with their international mandate, which contributes to supporting security and stability in “sisterly Lebanon.”
Egypt offered its “sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy” to the government and people of Serbia over the death of the Serbian soldier, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured peacekeepers.
The ministry reiterated Cairo’s commitment to the security of UNIFIL forces, given their “vital role” in preserving security and stability in Lebanon.
