Egyptian consul in Marseille attends unveiling of replica Luxor Obelisk in France
In a beautiful celebration of cultural heritage and international friendship, Her Excellency Ambassador Heidi Serry, Egypt’s Consul General in Marseille, attended the unveiling ceremony of a replica of the Luxor Obelisk. This event took place in Le Luc-en-Provence, France, and was graciously attended by the town’s mayor and the governor of the Var region.
The replica obelisk pays homage to the historic Luxor Obelisk that stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris—a gift from Egypt’s Mohamed Ali Pasha to the King of France in the 19th century. The town of Le Luc-en-Provence is especially significant as the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Apollinaire Lebas, the engineer who oversaw the original obelisk’s transport from Egypt to France.
The new monument was crafted with care and expertise by the Egyptian company "Marmonil," renowned for its work in marble and stone. Using authentic red granite sourced from Luxor, the replica honors both the artistry of ancient Egypt and the enduring friendship between Egypt and France.
The unveiling ceremony offered a warm reminder of the importance of preserving shared history and building bridges between nations for generations to come.
