Korean cutural center in Cairo showcases webtoon art in global exhibition

In celebration of Korea’s global cultural influence, the Korean Cultural Center in Egypt has opened the doors to a special exhibition, “Korean Webtoons,” at its headquarters in Dokki, Cairo.

The month-long display marks the first stop of a global tour, aiming to spotlight the creative power and international appeal of Korea’s digital comics, known as webtoons.

The exhibition’s centerpiece is the story “Hellbound,” a gripping tale co-created by renowned writer Choi Gyu-seok and director Yeon Sang-ho. The webtoon achieved global fame after its adaptation into a hit Korean drama series, “Hellbound.” The narrative imagines a world where supernatural beings mete out otherworldly punishments to wrongdoers, sparking debates about justice and faith in the face of fear, and challenging visitors to reflect on the nature of belief and the complexities of human morality.

Attendees of the exhibition’s opening were treated not only to stunning visuals and immersive displays, but also the opportunity to engage directly with Choi Gyu-seok himself. The celebrated author greeted visitors, offering thought-provoking insights into the creative process and the deeper philosophical questions explored in “Hellbound,” particularly those around faith, fear, and the search for justice.

Webtoons, or “K-Webtoons,” have revolutionized digital storytelling worldwide, celebrated for their vertical format, cinematic flair, vibrant color palettes, and compelling narratives—all designed to be enjoyed on mobile phones and computers. Originating in Korea in the late 1990s, webtoons began as a grassroots movement among amateur artists. Today, they attract millions of readers and have transformed into a global phenomenon, inspiring numerous adaptations and interactive experiences.

The Cairo exhibition offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of K-Webtoons, featuring interactive installations, selected scenes from the “Hellbound” drama, and engaging content designed to delight visitors of all ages.
