Egypt activates emergency energy plan amid regional gas supply disruptions
Due to recent military events in the region, natural gas supplies from the East have been interrupted. In response, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has activated a pre-prepared emergency plan to prioritize the supply of natural gas.
As precautionary measures, the ministry has temporarily stopped supplying natural gas to certain industrial sectors.
At the same time, electricity stations have increased their use of fuel oil (mazut) to the highest possible levels, and are coordinating to operate some stations using diesel instead.
“These actions are aimed at maintaining the stability of the national gas network and avoiding the need to lower electricity loads, while waiting for natural gas supplies from the East to resume,” a statement by the Ministry said.
It’s reassuring to note that three liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification ships have recently arrived in Egypt.
Currently, one of these ships is already feeding gas into the national gas grid, and preparations are underway to connect the other two ships to the ports as soon as possible, so they can also begin supplying gas.
The Ministry’s operations room is closely monitoring the situation around the clock, ensuring that the gas network remains safe and that fuel oil reserves are secure.
In addition, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, visited the National Gas Control Center to review progress in implementing the emergency plan.
The Minister of Petroleum also visited Ain Sokhna Port to accelerate the connection of the third regasification ship to the national grid.
Finally, the Prime Minister convened a meeting with both ministers to stay updated on the latest developments and to ensure the emergency plan continues to be implemented effectively.
