Egypt’s Mahara-Tech wins UNESCO prize for innovation in education
Egypt’s digital education platform, Mahara-Tech, has been awarded the prestigious UNESCO – King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education for 2025. The award ceremony took place in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in the presence of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, celebrating the achievements of four winners selected from over 40 countries worldwide.
Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chair of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO, congratulated the Mahara-Tech team and the Information Technology Institute (ITI) for their accomplishment. He highlighted that this recognition demonstrates Egypt’s growing leadership in applying digital and artificial intelligence technologies to education, in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and digital transformation strategy.
This year’s prize focused on “Preparing Learners and Teachers for an Ethical and Responsible Use of AI.” Mahara-Tech was selected after a rigorous national selection process, overseen by the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO, which officially nominates projects for the prize.
Mahara-Tech stands out as a pioneering educational platform harnessing AI to provide integrated learning services. These include technology job maps—guiding users through educational pathways and certifications for various specializations—and skill maps outlining essential technical skills and corresponding resources for each job. In addition, Mahara-Tech offers AI-powered tools such as smart assistants, automated assignment correction, and content summarization, all aimed at creating a more interactive and flexible learning experience.
Dr. Ashour praised the team’s efforts, stating the win reflects the country’s commitment to building digital capacity among learners and educators. This recognition, he added, marks a significant milestone for Egypt as it continues to advance the digitalization of its education sector and foster innovation in teaching and learning globally.
