Egyptian and Saudi FMs hold bilateral talks on sidelines of G20 Summit
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met on Saturday with Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and coordinating positions on key regional and international developments of mutual concern.
The two ministers reaffirmed the deep-rooted and distinguished historical ties between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, highlighting the positive momentum in cooperation across various fields, in line with the ongoing directives of the leaderships of both countries — President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman — to enhance strategic partnership for the benefit of their brotherly peoples.
Both sides stressed the importance of finalizing preparations for the inaugural session of the Egyptian-Saudi Supreme Coordination Council, to be co-chaired by President El-Sisi and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the near future, as a key step toward broadening strategic cooperation.
The ministers exchanged views on several pressing regional issues, foremost among them the situation in Gaza. They emphasized the need to implement the latest UN Security Council resolution on Gaza and advance the second phase of U.S. President Trump’s peace plan. Dr. Abdelatty underscored the importance of enabling the international stabilization force to fulfill its mandate in consolidating the ceasefire and ensuring the security of the Palestinian people in the Strip. He also reviewed ongoing efforts to sustain the ceasefire, implement the Sharm El-Sheikh peace agreement, and prepare for an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza.
The discussions also covered developments in Sudan, with both ministers stressing the need for a comprehensive ceasefire, the creation of conditions to resume the political process, and the preservation of Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and stability in order to end the suffering of the Sudanese people. They reaffirmed support for Sudan’s national institutions and the importance of coordinated Arab and regional efforts to restore security and stability in Sudan and the wider region.
On Lebanon, Dr. Abdelatty emphasized the necessity of preserving the country’s stability, unity, and territorial integrity, and avoiding any steps that could escalate tensions or threaten Lebanese security. Both sides reiterated their support for Lebanon’s state institutions and respect for its sovereignty.
The ministers also discussed the outcomes of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s recent visit to the United States, with Dr. Abdelatty welcoming the successful and fruitful results of the trip and its positive impact on Arab and Islamic interests.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan expressed gratitude for Egypt’s continued support for regional peace, security, and stability efforts, reaffirming the strategic nature of Egyptian-Saudi relations and the importance of close coordination in serving the broader interests of the Arab and Islamic nations.
