Egypt, Türkiye aim for $15 billion trade and joint action on Gaza crisis
In a continued effort to deepen diplomatic relations, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, held a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Mr. Hakan Fidan, on Sunday. The call, part of ongoing dialogue to strengthen Egypt-Türkiye relations, also provided a platform to exchange perspectives on pressing developments in the Middle East.
During the discussion, both ministers praised the significant progress in bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. They welcomed the recent increase in high-level visits between the two countries—an important step as Egypt and Türkiye mark the centenary of their diplomatic relationship in 2024.
Looking forward, the ministers expressed shared aspirations to expand economic and commercial ties, aiming to boost annual bilateral trade to $15 billion. They also highlighted the positive impact of Turkish investments in Egypt, supported by recent economic reforms and outcomes from the inaugural High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, co-chaired by both Presidents in September 2024.
On regional affairs, the two sides focused on the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. Minister Abdel Aty briefed his Turkish counterpart on Egypt’s ongoing collaboration with Qatar and the United States to broker a ceasefire, and on joint efforts to deliver humanitarian, medical, and shelter aid to Palestinians under siege. The ministers stressed the urgency of increasing the flow of relief convoys and called for continued international efforts to halt the Israeli offensive and end the current blockade-driven starvation in the enclave. Both ministers underscored the need for a deal to secure the release of hostages, stop collective punishment, and ensure respect for international humanitarian law. They reiterated the importance of exerting pressure on all parties towards an immediate ceasefire.
The conversation also covered broader regional developments, including the situations in Syria and Libya, emphasizing the shared commitment of Egypt and Türkiye to regional stability and peace.
This renewed high-level contact reflects a mutual determination to overcome past discord and work jointly on both bilateral and regional challenges, underlining the crucial role both nations play in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
