China’s Xinjiang leads a green revolution

In a heartfelt message shared in Arabic on social media, the Chinese Ambassador to Egypt, Liao Liqiang, has highlighted Xinjiang’s extraordinary success in environmental restoration, sustainable economic growth, and green innovation—a showcase of China’s commitment to building an “ecological civilization.”

By 2025, Xinjiang will add nearly 4.79 million mu (about 797,000 acres) of new green space along the edge of the vast Taklamakan Desert. The ambitious project will expand Xinjiang’s “green protection belt” to a width of 7.5 kilometers—demonstrating the potential of technology-driven large-scale desertification control.

Xinjiang’s progress in environmental governance is a result of scientific seed selection, responsible water resource management, and a combination of innovative approaches, such as biological sand control, engineering solutions, and the use of solar power to halt desert encroachment.

Environmental restoration goes hand-in-hand with economic vitality in Xinjiang. Over six million mu (more than a million acres) of unique, high-value crops now flourish in southern Xinjiang, contributing to an annual production value exceeding 30 billion yuan (over 4 billion USD) and creating jobs for more than 300,000 people.

Integrating new photovoltaic power (over 6.4 million kilowatts) into sand control activities, Xinjiang is piloting energy projects across nearly 200,000 mu of desert, advancing a win-win model that benefits both local economies and the environment.

“Xinjiang offers a valuable example of how environmental stewardship, renewable energy development, and industrial progress can work hand-in-hand in arid regions,” the Ambassador noted. China’s unique experience provides actionable solutions for greening arid lands worldwide—an endeavor of great hope and significance in the era of climate change.

As nations around the globe explore pathways for sustainable growth and climate resilience, Xinjiang’s blend of scientific management, ecological restoration, and green industry serves as a beacon for regions facing desertification and environmental challenges.
